Proprietary
Proprietary specifies ownership by one party or organization. It is
the opposite of public domain. The term is commonly used in reference
to trademarks, to privately-owned databases (proprietary information), or to
designate non-standard hardware or software features that are incompatible
with other products. Proprietary protocols are not necessarily inferior; the
ingenuity that spawns the development of new programs invariably gives
birth to proprietary features.
